We knew we wanted to be in the desert…
That was it. That was the broad idea that kicked things off. We liked it out here & wanted to keep coming back. It felt free & lighter & more immediate.
We started visiting the desert areas of Southern California years & years ago never thinking it would be a place we’d call home, but our time here & our experiences exploring from Niland to Joshua, Palm Springs, Palm Desert, Hemet, Indio & Yucca Valley, eventually brought us back again & again.
Then timing & circumstance intersected & we felt we had to jump on our chance to build a home in the place that we loved. Now or never. It didn’t hurt that we already had a small group of friends in this wide open place. Friends & solitude are both nice things to have out here.
Camping on the land allowed us to really tune into it, tracking the shifts in the light & the patterns of the winds. From raw land, our home grew. It was an idea. It was sketches on napkins. Somehow those napkins turned into blueprints & somehow those blueprints came to fruition in the form of The Serra House.
The Serra takes inspiration from the land it rests on, its colors & the beauty of the surrounding mesa. We filled it with the woodworking of our skilled friends, touches of personal style & modern comforts. During construction, leaving the land as natural as possible was a priority. We preserved as much as we could & continue on that path. We try to be good stewards of our little piece of the desert & hope that in sharing it with others, they’ll discover the magic for themselves & try to be good stewards too so that we can all keep returning for years to come.
